Kyu Yamamoto began studying sculpture in a fine arts high school in Nagoya, Japan, under the tutelage of Kozo Shibata. After attending Aichi Fine Arts University, he worked for several years with the commercial Rui Kobo Studios, contracting frequently with Tokyo Disneyland and other themed attractions throughout Japan for the creation of figures and animals both whimsical and life-like.

In 1985, Yamamoto moved to Nashville, TN, serving as Assistant Sculptor for completion of the 42 foot Athena Parthenos, the world’s tallest indoor sculpture outside Japan, located in Nashville’s century-old replica of the Greek Parthenon.

Kyu moved his studio to St. Petersburg, FL in 1992, where he is known for his contributions to Public Art. He is a former Trustee of The Arts Center there, and he has worked extensively with St. Petersburg’s Office’s of Cultural Affairs and International Relations. He serves there on the faculty of the Arts Center and the Dunedin Fine Arts Center. He was guest instructor at the Penland school of craft in North Carolina in 2008.

After years of relative obscurity, the Highwaymen have earned their place in Florida’s artistic history. Painting for the new tourists who were discovering modern Florida’s east coast in the 50s, 60s and 70s, a group of African American men and one woman influenced by the state’s premier landscape artist, A. E. “Beanie” Backus, painted their way out of harvesting citrus by painting the environment around Ft. Pierce.

Led by a young Harold Newton, a self-taught artist who met Backus and joined by Harold Newton, who learned under Backus at the urging of his high school teacher, they set out to offer affordable art to area businesses and to the hundreds of southbound northerners as souvenirs. They developed a way to paint fast, cheap and prolific and soon were earning themselves a good living, a remarkable achievement for young black men in Florida’s Jim Crow south.

Soon, artists whose names would become synonymous with what eventually became known as the Highwaymen, joined them – James Gibson, Roy McLendon and Livingston Roberts, and a cottage industry was born.

After watching Harold Newton “make color come to life,” Mary Ann Carroll was absorbed into the group, making her the only woman in a growing collection of African American artists who have painted the face of Florida’s natural beauty, mystery and intense hues, and for many, a face that long-ago disappeared.

Studio Mares is proud to have a small collection of Highwaymen paintings for sale, originally owned by Tony Hayton of Ontario, Canada, who’s made it his personal mission to familiarize Florida’s west coast with the impassioned work of this unique assembly of artists.
